Well, here’s the thing, I play squash rather poorly, I really haven’t had much practice. I tend to hit the ball too high and out of bounds.
This time the heaters were switched on and for some unusual and unsafe reason the squash court building people had put the kind of heaters that warm up an element and placed them up near the celling, which seems silly to me as heat goes up.
I managed to hit the ball and lodge it in the grate covering and it didn’t take long for black smoke to start pouring out from the element heater. We looked quite desperately for a way of turning off the element heating thing but soon flames started to lick around the squash ball.
As my friend went in search of help, and the fire brigade I sat and watch the molten rubber ball start falling to the floor in a burning heap. It quit quickly became clear that I needed to take more decisive action, looking at the choice of fire extinguishers available I decided water was not a good option abut the squash court management people had also left one full of CO2. Once I figured out that I needed to pull out the pin to use it I covered the floor fire in a cloud of white CO2 and pointed it up where the element heater was still flaming and sent a cloud of CO2 up there as well.
Thankfully no one was hurt and all was left was the chard remains of my friends squash ball and a nasty smell.
